That was so important – it made us feel so much better about everything. And the nurses would always make us laugh as well. Mum and I would sometimes giggle and joke around to bring some lightness to the situation. They were so good at just chatting about normal things – and always remembered what mum had said. I think what made their care so special wasn’t just the medical bits they did for mum (though these were fantastic!), but it was how they treated us as friends. They made me feel it was okay to be cross and upset with the situation – having that reassurance was incredible and took a huge weight off my shoulders. Dorothy House provided me with counselling. As mum’s carer, there was a time when I found things particularly difficult. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them.Īnd I’m so grateful for the support they gave me too. There was always a nurse at the end of the phone – available to chat any time of day or night. She’d say, “I must get ready, I can’t let the nurses see me in my nightie!” And the support they gave us was brilliant – it meant we could carry on with normal life as much as possible. Mum really looked forward to their visits because they gave her something to focus on. All the help she had was at home – weekly phone calls and nurse visits – made such a huge difference. It was right in the thick of the pandemic so mum couldn’t go into the Hospice. The doctors initially gave her six months, but mum being mum, she was determined to live a normal life for as long as possible.Ī couple of years after her diagnosis, when things started to get really hard for mum, we were put in touch with Dorothy House. I’d ask myself how somebody so sprightly and so full of life could have such limited time left – it didn’t seem fathomable. So, in 2019, when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, we were all in complete shock. I always loved that about her – my wild, young-at-heart, amazing mum. When she was 75, she went on a trip to Thailand and went paragliding over the beach. Mum always had a bit of a wild side – her life was full of fun and adventure. It meant we could carry on with normal life – I don’t know what we’d have done without them.” “Everything Dorothy House did for mum and me was amazing.
